Past Clean-ups

2006 ended with N.A.R.C. winning an award at the Keep Wales Tidy awards ceremony which we gratefully receive along with a cheque for £500 which again thank you very much as was well needed as we still haven't found any gold, is there muck where there is brass? we can only live in hope of a gold shopping trolley.

NARC held an underwater cleanup as part of the Keep Wales Tidy Week at Fishguard Harbour 17/09/06 which was fully supported by Celtic Diving and covered by ITV News.

Both the Northern and Eastern Breakwaters were cleaned as well as Pen Anglas Point.

A number of disused lobster pots lost in storms still "ghost fishing" were recovered and a hapless undersized baby lobster was released.

So the best year so far and we have plenty of new ideas for next year . So on that note we d like to wish you all a happy Christmas and a tremendous neoprene donned new year !!

Neptunes Army of Rubbish Cleaners (narc) 2006 Summary

N.A.R.C.  successfully carried out 6 underwater clean up s and also our first river .The river clean up was carried out on the Western Cleddau in Haverfordwest. The group is slowly increasing and awareness of the group and interest from other areas as we successfully got our smilers on the television and on the radio twice no smilers on view with that one.

So during the year we successfully removed the usual rubbish ranging from push bikes, trolleys, snagged angling equipment we seem to be finding everything even a kitchen complete with taps plug etc but no crockery .

The group attended various events during the year ,and is now the proud owner of a set of display boards which will be put up where ever we can to promote the idea of underwater clean ups.The group has also had made some merchandise which will also be made available on this website .

The committee would like to thank all who turned up on the end of season do. This year everyone was spared my dreadful bingo calling, the prizes though still of the same ilk.

We would like to thank our volunteers who came from the following Carmarthen Bay, Celtic Dive Club, Llanreath, Llantrisant S.A.C and all the independents .

We would also like to thank the following for their support over the year Keep Wales Tidy, P.A.V.S, Milford Haven Port Authority, C.C.W , Celtic Diving, S.A.C., the local fire brigade for their assistance at Hobbs point.

N.A.R.C. has carried on from last year with their underwater clean ups.

The year started with a clean up at Stackpole Quay on the 23 rd of April. We must be liked by above as everywhere else in Pembrokeshire took a pounding and we had 6 m viz .The clean up was a success as we not only collected rubbish but also freed some dogfish snagged on lost fishing tackle and spider crabs tangled in fishing line. Everyone stayed on after to help dekit the boat and have a deserved cup of tea at the restaurant at Stackpole Quay.

Our next clean up was on the river in Haverfordwest, was a huge success N.A.R.C received lots of assistance from different groups such as a local kayak club and also the town Mayor was on hand to help out. The kayak club were keen as they use to use the river for kayak polo, but a while ago stopped because they thought the river to be unsafe, so now hopefully they'll return. During the clean up lots of things were found such as an ornamental heron, shopping trolleys everything including a kitchen sink.

The next clean up did not happen due to weather and sea state, just to prove that the sun doesn't always shine on us either.

During the month of June N.A.R.C. supported Keep Wales Tidy, Tidy Wales Week and successfully carried out 3 clean ups and received lots of media attention.

First was Stackpole Quay, where not only did we do an underwater clean up but a beach one was done at the same time. Always fortunate at Stackpole Quay with good viz. Radio Wales were present and several members were interviewed.

Second was Hobbs Point our first visit of the year ,it was done to aid Keep Wales Tidy s Pride in our Communities ,which looks at the problem s caused by fly tipping. N.A.R.C. were assisted by the Fire Brigade dive unit and P.E.A.T.

As always the rubbish collected consisted of shopping trolleys, push bikes, but the most interesting find was an old pop bottle with the marble still in it, drunk by someone all those years ago who thought it ok to put his rubbish in the sea, out of sight out of mind. H.T.V. WALES were present and the clean up was shown on the news the following evening.

Third clean up saw N.A.R.C  performing an underwater clean up in the Skomer M.N.R. on a lovely Friday evening. Again well supported and the viz was brilliant too. One buddy pairing collected 107 fishing weights in 40 minutes. N.A.R.C.  would like to thank everyone whose helped the following clubs Carmarthen bay, Llanreath divers, Llantrisant S.A.A., Puffin and also a big thanks to all the independent divers.

2005 NARC successfully carried out 6 clean ups around the Pembrokeshire coastline.  Our first outing saw us visit Stackpole Quay on 30th April 2005 when 12 volunteers collected 72kg of lead in the form of fishing weights.

May 17th We went to Hobbs Point where 14 volunteers removed a wide selection of rubbish ranging from revolving chairs to shopping trolleys to an anchor.

June 25th At Martin’s Haven 13 volunteers launched 3 boats and recovered angling debris and a mobile phone!

August 12th The glorious twelfth saw our return to Hobbs Point.  18 volunteers in two boats removed the usual mountain bike (which one of the volunteers wanted to do – recycling a cycle!!), a non-recyclable microwave and various other weird and wonderful finds.

September 10th We returned to Stackpole Quay with 10 volunteers and removed 235kg of fishing weights. A “Slurp” tea mug was the prize fund.  Perhaps we are having an effect?

October 9th Ten volunteers returned to Hobbs Point for the final clean up of the season.  We removed the usual Hobbs Point rubbish such as Beach Caster fishing rods and a few golf balls.  There’s no golf course nearby – must be the past time of the resident lobster!!

The year ended with a Christmas dinner and novelty bingo in the Navy Inn in Pembroke Dock   If the volunteers want more bingo they’ll have to get a different caller.

A big thank you to all our volunteers in 2005, who came from Llantrisant Dive Club, Llanreath, Ogwr, Carmarthen Bay and Puffin, and independent divers.  We are very grateful for all their help and use of their boats.
